What I most regret, is not having kept a journal of my travels, being conscious that a number of interesting details have slipped my memory; for never did I exist so completely, never live so thoroughly, never was so much myself, if I dare use the expression, as in those journeys made on foot.

Walking animates and enlivens my spirits; I can hardly think when in a state of inactivity; my body must be exercised to make my judgmemt active.
The view of a fine country, a succession of agreeable prospects, a free air, a good appetite, and the health I gained by walking; the freedom of inns, and the distance from everything that can make me recollect the dependence of my situation, conspire to free my soul, and give boldness to my thoughts, throwing me, in a manner, into the immensity of beings, where I combine, choose and appropriate them to my fancy, without constraint or fear.

Rende is a green city, a young city, a model city. A city that is born, imagining itself modern, from a university and from a highway. In Rende the green, from urban standard of Plan, becomes fluvial park, boulevard park, meadow, tree-lined axis, parking lot flower-bed, motorway exit flower-bed.
Guarantee of a good life, certificate of modernity, the green is the emblem of the urban model. Behind the emblem, the real city. The cranes city, in an endless construction; the tenants city, that follows the rarefaction density; the cars city, that lines up to the fast motorways; the city of the motorway exits as squares, of the churches as roundabouts, of the shopping malls as urban centres; the history-free city, that tries to differentiate buildings that are all the same through phoney styles; the city under which a rural world still resists.

If the green is the theme to compose an image of Rende, the effort to see beyond the green is the effort to portray, beyond the image, the city.
